Quick Hits Vol. I

Capture Minnesota launched a little more than two weeks ago. In two short weeks Minnesota photographers have submitted nearly 5,000 photos and local folks have cast more than 100,000 votes for their favorites. What a great start!

As a part of the Capture Minnesota experience, our editors will select photos from time to time and feature them in a showcase like you see here. A showcase is a digital publication of a collection of photos curated by our editors. Often showcases will follow a particular theme, but for this one we're calling it "Quick Hits Vol. I" and featuring a few of our favorite early submissions. Enjoy!

March, Minnesota by Adam Johnson

March, Minnesota

Marshall County Minnesota. There's not much out there... I'd headed out to the Red River from my campsite at Old Mill State Park hoping to find an interesting train tressel to photograph at sunset. Though I didn't find what I was looking for, I did notice this lone, peculiar granary off Highway 1. The land here is absolutely flat, with vast fields, and The Red River Valley has some of the richest soil in all the world. Captured with a Mamiya M645 & Fuji Velvia RVP 50
Adam Johnson Minnesota Photography

For one of my shoots I brought a few of my friends up north to my families land. We snapped some shots of my uncles field. This one is of my friend Nicole, carrying a guitar on her back.

Whitewater State Park by Adam Johnson

Whitewater State Park

The campground is along the edge of the river. When I'd arrived in the afternoon it was a warm and sunny day. Around 5:00pm, clouds came over the hills and it rained hard for 15-20 minutes. After the rain tapered off, heavy fog filled the valley and remained through the next morning. Captured with a Mamiya M645 and Fuji Velvia 50. 2 Seconds @ f/22
Adam Johnson Minnesota Photography

Down the Skyway by joe ennesser

Down the Skyway

Taken in the Minneapolis Skyway conecting the Graves 601 hotel to Target Center. This is only my second time to downtown MSP and I’m fascinated by how these Skyways go all over downtown like big hamster Habitrails.

Endless Sunflowers by Adam Johnson

Endless Sunflowers

This scene was captured on film at sunset August 15, 2010 near Roseau, Minnesota as a fast-moving cold front pushed the clouds east at sunset. After three days of overcast and rain, I’d noticed a thin band of blue sky far off to the west and knew that when the sun set in about 30 minutes, it would fall below the clouds and light up the sky, so I grabbed my camera and we headed out to watch from this sunflower field I’d noticed on my drive up from Minneapolis. A Surprise Drift in Hanley Falls by Mike Vandenberg

A Surprise Drift in Hanley Falls

Having seen a northbound train arrive in Willmar just an hour earlier, I wasn't expecting to find any drifts for this empty grain train to bust through on the Marshall Sub. As luck would have it, a local farmer had just finished clearing out the drifts in his driveway...perfect timing for me and this very dirty leader! Luckily, the telephoto lens kept me far enough away from the snow chunks that I came away with only a little powder on my hood...a very good thing.

Rush River Granary by Adam Johnson

Rush River Granary

April, before the planting began. The land owner was out for his evening tractor ride when he found me photographing from the road. After talking for a few minutes, he suggested I get up close for a better view. The house was moved to the neighboring plot years ago, leaving this abandoned granary as the only remaining structure. Captured with a Mamiya M645, wide-angle 35mm f/3.5 lens, and Velvia 50 slide film.
Adam Johnson Minnesota Photography
