Hell's Gate Rapids

The Kettle River's most notorious rapid, the Hell's Gate rapids has a reputation of being a widow maker. Located deep in the heart of Banning State Park, the Hell's Gate canyon is an adventure just getting there. On my first trip to Banning State Park (with fellow CM Photographer, June Fahrmann) we hiked all the way to Hell's Gate without really knowing it. When we reached the end of the trail that runs along the Kettle River, we stopped and spoke to some other hikers who said it was their first time in Banning. We all wondered where Hell's Gate was since we'd seen numerous signs pointing in that direction along the trail. Still wondering what we'd missed, we turned back. Only after I was home processing the photos I'd shot that day did I realize "Hell's Gate" was the rapids on the Kettle River where the trail ends. We had stopped right at the rapids and I shot this image while there. :-)
